Hungarian Cruise Ship Collided
On the evening of May 29th, a major accident involving two cruise ships collided on the Danube River on the side of the Capitol Building in central Budapest. A cruise ship carrying 33 South Korean tourists sank on the Danube River in Budapest, Hungary. Up to now, 7 people have been confirmed. The victims were missing and 19 people were missing.
One of the two ships that collided was a large luxury cruise ship and the other was a smaller ordinary cruise ship. It is reported that when the accident occurred, the large luxury cruise ship "Viking Sigyn" was tilted, and the nearby cruise ship named "Mermaid" was involved, which directly caused the ship to sink quickly. After the accident, many people fell into the water, after 14 people were rescued, and 7 people were sent to the hospital with a lighter injury.
A spokesperson for the Hungarian National Emergency Center said at a news conference held at the Danube Riverside scene on the same day that 7 of the 14 people rescued were unfortunately killed and 7 others were slightly injured and sent to the hospital.
It is reported that the wreckage of the shipwreck has been found, located at the bottom of the river three meters away from the pier of the Margit Bridge. As for when it can be salvaged out of the Danube, the official has not disclosed yet, and yesterday, strong winds and heavy rains caused the water level of the Danube to rise and the water flow was urgent, which also added difficulty for search and rescue work.
The Hungarian National Water Authority has ordered a 24-hour monitoring point along the river between Budapest and the southern border of Hungary.
The Hungarian National Police (ORFK) has conducted a criminal investigation into the incident, and the captain of the large luxury cruise ship "Viking Sigyn" has been inquired by the police. Panorama Deck, a cruise ship company operating the Mermaid, expressed condolences to the families of the victims of the accident. The accident vessel had 60 life jackets. The captain and other crew members have performed well during the company’s work. The disaster occurred. Shocking. The company said it will fully cooperate with relevant departments to conduct investigations and set up an internal committee to investigate the details of the accident.
Li Xiangqi, senior director of a Korean travel agency, confirmed that 30 of the 33 Koreans, two tour guides and one photographer. He said that the tour group included a 73-year-old man and a six-year-old girl, and the rest of the travellers were mostly between 40-50 years old.
The Hungarian Disaster Management Department said it has mobilized nearly 100 firefighters, as well as fire trucks and other equipment to search for survivors. But in recent weeks, due to heavy rains and rapid currents, rescue work is facing difficulties.
The Korean Embassy in Hungary has set up an emergency rescue team and cooperated with local authorities to provide assistance at the scene of the accident. South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Jing and went to Hungary on the 30th to direct the accident response work.
